Involving the Community

Community groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, the Island Development and Reuse Committe, Fort Crawford Museum, and the Prairie du Chien Women's Civic Club have all had personal presentations of the sculpture models and each group has asked for ideas and recommendations about which figures should be represented in the project. There is a group of volunteers forming who will be involved in publishing information about the park and each of the historical figures in the park.

Also the Native American Tribes who have historically been at or around Prairie du Chien have all been consulted about which figures they would like to see in the project.

The artist has made historically accurate models of the figures for the park based on the information received personally, library research, and from the archives of the Wisconsin State Historical Society. These models are on display throughout the Prairie du Chien Wi and Marquette Iowa area. The "home" of the models is in a former automobile dealership display area, just East of the current Prairie du Chien City Hall (East on Blackhawk Avenue).

Local school classes will be asked for information about the figures represented and the historical stories involved. It is a project that will involve the whole community so that it becomes a focal point of community identity and an attraction for all residents in the area.
